The clothes we live in are the ones we think about least: the T-shirt, the jeans, the jumper that goes with everything. On Amazon’s best-seller lists, most of them are made of plastic, and the listing says so in one short line.

We read that line on 64 of the best-selling pieces, scored every one the same way, and marked the ones we would pick. The natural-fibre side of the wardrobe has its own page: Conscious Clothing.

What these clothes are actually made of

Seven fibres, and where each one tops out

Every piece starts at 100 on each of our four pillars. A ceiling is the highest a pillar can reach for that material, whatever else the piece gets right. Frequency asks how far the fibre has travelled from the plant; Gaia asks where it goes when you are done with it.

What the everyday shelf is made of

↓Plastic by the percentage

Of the 19 best-selling women’s tops and dresses we scored, 14 are half plastic or more. Across all 64 pieces, 27 are.

↓It sheds in the wash

One study counted about 729,000 fibres from a 6 kg load of acrylic, and 496,000 from polyester.

↓Dyes nobody names

Almost no listing names its dyes. Four Amazon Essentials pieces say they are certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, but three give no certificate number. The fourth shows one, and on the OEKO-TEX Label Check that certificate has expired. So the dye rows still apply; we show the claim on their cards.

↓Bisphenols and polyester

Where polyester is half the fabric or more, our bisphenol row applies. No brand on these lists publishes a test on the finished garment.

↓Recycled is still polyester

“Certified recycled” changes where the plastic came from. It still sheds, and it still will not break down.

↓Made from plants, chemically

Viscose, rayon, modal and bamboo viscose start as wood. The making uses carbon disulfide, which is why those pieces lose points on Gaia.

“Polyester, spandex” with no percentages tells you nothing. We leave those listings out, and so can you.

↑Cotton as the main fibre

Cotton-rich pieces are the bridge: most of the Shake Picks on this page are mostly cotton.

↑Jeans with little stretch

Classic denim is mostly cotton. 4 of the 15 best-selling jeans we read are 100% cotton.

↑One fibre, not five

A single fibre can be recycled or composted. A blend of four cannot be taken apart again.

↑A certificate number

GOTS or OEKO-TEX with a number we can look up lifts a score. Only one of these listings shows one, and it has expired.

↑Natural fibres first

Denim, in plain words

Jeans were the surprise of this shelf. Classic denim is mostly cotton, so the best-selling jeans score better than almost anything else here: 4 of the 15 we read are 100% cotton. Stretch is where plastic slips in: “comfort stretch” jeans on these lists carry up to 39% polyester.

What we cannot see yet is how denim is dyed and finished. Two questions we now ask every jeans listing: what dye, and by what process; and how the faded look is made, with laser and ozone, or with sandblasting and spray. No listing we read answers either. Denim will get a page of its own.

It does not say a polyester top will harm you. Our rows describe what is evidenced about the materials and what the listing leaves out.
