Home & Kitchen — Water
Every cell begins with water — choose what you fill them with

Water is the foundation of every cellular process in the human body. You are approximately 60% water. Every thought, every heartbeat, every metabolic reaction depends on it. Yet most households consume water stripped of its minerals, laden with fluoride and chlorine, transported through plastic pipes, and stored in plastic containers. Shake thinks the most important thing you drink every day deserves the most careful attention.

Filtration · Mineralisation · Intention · Conscious Hydration
Water Awareness

What your water actually is —
and what it could become.

Understanding water is not one conversation — it is five. Contamination. Mineralisation. Structure. Intention. Storage. Each layer matters. Together they describe the difference between water that is technically safe to drink and water that actively supports the body it enters.

01 Fluoride — a neurotoxin in your tap Remove it first

As covered in Shake’s Dental Care page — fluoride’s neurotoxicity is no longer fringe. A 2024 US federal court ruled it presents “unreasonable risk of injury to health.” The National Toxicology Programme classifies it as a neurotoxin. Utah and Florida have banned water fluoridation by law. Over 15 European countries have never fluoridated. Unlike topical application, fluoride ingested through water enters the bloodstream directly — accumulating in bones, pineal gland, and brain tissue over decades. The first priority in conscious water is removing it.

02 TDS — Total Dissolved Solids Minerals vs contaminants

TDS measures everything dissolved in water — both the beneficial (calcium, magnesium, potassium, trace minerals) and the harmful (fluoride, chlorine, heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues, PFAS). A TDS reading alone tells you nothing about water quality — it tells you water has content, not what that content is. The goal is not zero TDS — mineral-free water is less bioavailable and can actually leach minerals from the body. The goal is high-quality TDS: minerals present, contaminants removed. Remineralisation after filtration achieves this.

03 Vortex water — living water Viktor Schauberger’s legacy

Austrian naturalist Viktor Schauberger (1885–1958) spent his life observing that water in nature always moves in spirals — through rivers, streams, and underground springs. He believed straight-line movement through pipes depletes water’s vitality. Modern vortex technology mimics natural spiral motion, reorganising water molecules and restoring what Schauberger called “living water.” MAYU Water has built this principle into a beautiful glass vessel — the spiral vortex motion aerates, structures, and revitalises filtered water before drinking. The science is still emerging; the principle is ancient.

04 Celtic sea salt — cellular hydration A pinch changes everything

Unrefined Celtic sea salt — hand-harvested from the Guérande coast of Brittany, France using 2,000-year-old methods — contains 84 trace minerals including magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Unlike refined table salt (99% sodium chloride with all minerals stripped), Celtic sea salt in water provides a natural electrolyte matrix that supports cellular water absorption. A small pinch — approximately 1/8 teaspoon — in a glass of filtered water adds trace minerals and supports hydration at a cellular level. Simple. Ancestral. Effective.

05 Copper vessels — tamra jal 5,000 years of Ayurvedic wisdom

Tamra jal — copper-charged water — is one of Ayurveda’s oldest wellness practices. Water stored in a pure copper vessel for 6–8 hours acquires copper ions that have documented antimicrobial properties. A peer-reviewed study found water stored in copper pots for 16 hours significantly reduced E. coli, Salmonella, and Vibrio cholerae. The EPA has registered copper as the first solid antimicrobial material. Ayurveda describes copper as tridoshic — balancing all three doshas. One to two glasses of copper-charged water daily provides a natural trace mineral and antimicrobial benefit with 5,000 years of empirical validation behind it.

06 Dr. Emoto — the memory of water Intention and molecular structure

Dr. Masaru Emoto (1943–2014), a Japanese researcher and author of The Hidden Messages in Water, used high-speed photography to capture frozen water crystals after exposing water to words, music, and human intention. Water exposed to love, gratitude, and positive intention formed intricate, symmetrical crystals — water exposed to fear and negativity formed chaotic, distorted patterns. His findings remain scientifically contested and have not been replicated under fully controlled conditions. Yet the broader message resonates deeply with Shake’s philosophy: the quality and intention surrounding what we consume matters. If the body is 60% water, the energy and attention we bring to that water is worth considering.

Awareness · Intention · Direction
What to be mindful of

What is actually in your tap water —
and what it does over a lifetime.

Tap water in most developed countries is technically safe by regulatory standards — meaning the contaminants present are below thresholds considered acutely harmful. This is not the same as being genuinely healthy. Understanding what those thresholds permit — and what low-level daily exposure to multiple compounds compounds into over years — is the Shake approach to water awareness.

01 Fluoride — decades of accumulation

Fluoride added to municipal water supplies is not excreted efficiently by the body. Approximately 50% is absorbed into bones and soft tissue — including the pineal gland, where it accumulates at higher concentrations than any other soft tissue. The 2024 US federal court ruling, the NTP neurotoxin classification, and the legislative bans in Utah, Florida, and 18 further US states introducing bans all point in the same direction. Europe moved away from water fluoridation decades ago. Filtering fluoride from drinking water is the single most important water quality decision available.

02 Chlorine and chloramine disinfection byproducts

Chlorine is added to municipal water to kill pathogens — which it does effectively. The problem is what chlorine produces when it reacts with organic matter in water: trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) — compounds classified as probable human carcinogens. Chloramine, used as a longer-lasting alternative to chlorine, is harder to filter and produces its own range of disinfection byproducts. Both compounds affect the gut microbiome and skin barrier. Activated carbon filtration removes chlorine effectively; chloramine requires more comprehensive filtration.

03 PFAS — forever chemicals

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — dubbed “forever chemicals” — have been detected in water supplies across the US, Europe, and Australia. They do not break down in the environment or the body, accumulating in tissue over time and associated with thyroid disruption, immune system compromise, and increased cancer risk. The US EPA set new PFAS limits in drinking water in 2024, acknowledging the scale of contamination. Reverse osmosis filtration removes PFAS effectively — one of the most compelling arguments for investing in a serious home filtration system.

04 Heavy metals — pipes and infrastructure

Lead, copper, arsenic, and other heavy metals enter drinking water primarily through ageing pipe infrastructure — particularly in homes built before 1986, when lead solder was standard in plumbing. The Flint, Michigan water crisis brought this into public consciousness, but the issue extends far beyond one city. Even trace lead exposure has no safe threshold for children, affecting neurodevelopment and IQ. Whole-home filtration or point-of-use reverse osmosis are the most effective solutions.

05 Pharmaceutical residues

Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove pharmaceutical compounds — antidepressants, hormones, antibiotics, and pain medications pass through treatment and enter water supplies at low concentrations. Studies in the US, UK, and EU have detected these compounds in tap water. The long-term health implications of daily low-dose pharmaceutical exposure through water are understudied. Reverse osmosis and advanced carbon filtration are the most effective removal methods.

06 Microplastics in drinking water

Microplastics have been detected in tap water, bottled water, and groundwater globally. A WHO review found microplastics in 90% of bottled water tested — meaning plastic bottles are not a solution to plastic contamination. Microplastics have been found in human blood, lungs, and placentas. Reverse osmosis systems with sufficiently fine membranes remove microplastics effectively. Glass storage and copper vessels eliminate the plastic leaching that occurs when water is stored in plastic containers.

“Water exposed to love and gratitude forms stunningly intricate, symmetrical crystals — water exposed to words like ‘hate’ or ‘fear’ produces distorted, chaotic forms. Water is a mirror of consciousness itself.” Dr. Masaru Emoto Author, The Hidden Messages in Water · High-speed ice crystal photography, 1994–2014
Note: Dr. Emoto’s research is widely resonant but remains scientifically contested and unreplicated under fully controlled conditions. Shake presents it as a philosophical framework worth contemplating — not as established science.

Ancient Wisdom — Modern Validation

Tamra jal — copper water.
5,000 years of Ayurvedic practice.

In Ayurveda, water stored overnight in a pure copper vessel is called tamra jal — and it has been prescribed for digestive health, immunity, and vitality for over 5,000 years. The mechanism was not understood then. It is now. When water sits in a copper vessel for 6–8 hours, it absorbs copper ions through a process called the oligodynamic effect — the documented ability of metal ions to destroy bacteria and pathogens.

A peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition found that water stored in copper pots for 16 hours at room temperature significantly reduced E. coli, Salmonella Typhi, and Vibrio cholerae. The US Environmental Protection Agency has registered copper as the first solid antimicrobial material. Copper is used in hospital surface coatings and wound dressings for precisely this reason.

The practical protocol is simple: fill a pure, unlined copper vessel with filtered water in the evening. Drink 1–2 glasses first thing in the morning. Copper is an essential trace mineral — involved in collagen synthesis, iron metabolism, and antioxidant processes. Drinking from copper adds trace amounts of this mineral to your water in a bioavailable form, in a quantity that is beneficial rather than excessive. Clean the vessel regularly with lemon and salt — never with synthetic detergents.

“The ancient practice of tamra jal was functioning as a water purification technology in pre-industrial societies — before microbiology existed to explain why it worked.”

Mineralisation

What filtered water loses —
and how to put it back.

Reverse osmosis and advanced filtration systems remove contaminants with extraordinary effectiveness — but they also remove beneficial minerals. Calcium, magnesium, and potassium are stripped alongside fluoride and PFAS. Drinking demineralised water long-term is not the goal. The goal is filtered water that is then remineralised — returning what should be there while keeping out what should not.

Celtic Sea Salt — the simplest remineralisation

Celtic sea salt is hand-harvested from the Guérande coast of Brittany, France using traditional Celtic methods unchanged for over 2,000 years. Sun-dried in clay-lined salt ponds, it retains over 84 trace minerals — including magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, and zinc — that are entirely absent from refined table salt (99% sodium chloride). Adding a small pinch — approximately 1/8 teaspoon — to a glass of filtered water provides a natural trace mineral matrix and supports electrolyte balance. This is not a complex protocol. It is what water in nature already contains. The minerals naturally present in spring water are what make it taste better than tap — and what make it more bioavailable. Celtic salt in filtered water approximates that mineral profile simply and inexpensively.

Use grey-coloured, moist, coarse Celtic sea salt from Brittany — not white fine-grain sea salt, which is processed. Maison Le Guérandais and Le Paludier are the most trusted source brands. A small pinch in your morning glass of filtered water — alongside copper-vessel storage overnight — represents one of the most ancestral and evidence-supported hydration rituals available.

What to look for

Filter. Mineralise. Store consciously.
The complete water protocol.

Conscious water is not complicated. It is a sequence: remove what should not be there, restore what should, store in the right vessel, and drink with intention. These are the markers worth understanding at each stage.

Reverse osmosis — the gold standard filter

Reverse osmosis removes fluoride, PFAS, heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues, chloramine, and microplastics at the molecular level. It is the only filtration method that removes all of these simultaneously. Look for NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, and 401 certifications — each covering a different contaminant class. AquaTru is independently certified to remove 83 contaminants including 100% of fluoride. Always remineralise RO water after filtering.

Remineralisation after filtration

Filtered water should always be remineralised before drinking. Options include a remineralisation cartridge (available as an add-on for most RO systems), a small pinch of Celtic sea salt, or storage in a copper vessel overnight. The goal is to replace the calcium, magnesium, and trace minerals that filtration removes — restoring the mineral profile of good spring water.

Glass or copper storage — never plastic

Filtered water stored in plastic bottles or plastic-lined containers re-acquires microplastics and BPA/BPS leaching — particularly in warm conditions or sunlight. Glass and copper are the only storage materials that add nothing unwanted to water. The MAYU glass vortex vessel also re-aerates and structures water after filtering — addressing Viktor Schauberger’s “dead pipe water” concern.

Copper vessel overnight protocol

Fill a pure, unlined copper vessel with filtered water each evening. Drink 1–2 glasses first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything else. This combines tamra jal’s antimicrobial and mineral benefits with the optimal hydration window — the body’s most depleted state after sleep. Do not store water in copper for more than 12 hours. Clean weekly with lemon and coarse salt.

NSF certification — the non-negotiable filter

Any filtration system worth purchasing should carry NSF/ANSI certification — specifically 42 (chlorine), 53 (health effects contaminants), 58 (reverse osmosis), and 401 (emerging contaminants including pharmaceuticals and PFAS). Brands that claim fluoride removal without NSF certification cannot be verified. This is not a detail — it is the entire basis for trusting the product.

Vortex structuring — revitalised water

After filtering and remineralising, vortex structuring restores the spiral molecular motion that water naturally has in streams and springs — depleted by straight-line pipe transport. MAYU Water’s glass vortex carafe creates this motion continuously and beautifully. The science of structured water is still emerging — but the principle of returning water to a more natural state before drinking is entirely in line with Shake’s conscious living philosophy.

Water Awareness

Every cell begins with water —
choose what you fill them with.

The body does not distinguish between water as a delivery vehicle and water as a health intervention. Every glass is both. The fluoride, chlorination byproducts, PFAS, and pharmaceutical residues that enter the body through water do so in the same moment as the hydration that sustains it. There is no neutral option. Every glass of water either supports cellular function or introduces a small additional burden into it. Over a lifetime of daily drinking, those small differences compound into something significant.

The complete conscious water protocol is not complicated. Filter first — reverse osmosis removes virtually everything that should not be there. Remineralise second — Celtic salt, a remineralisation cartridge, or copper vessel storage returns what should be there. Store in glass or copper — never plastic. Vortex if you choose — returning some of the living motion that pipe transport removes. This is not an expensive or exotic protocol. It is a sequence of decisions that align daily hydration with what the body actually needs.

Viktor Schauberger wrote: “The true foundation of all culture is the knowledge and understanding of water.” Dr. Emoto spent his life suggesting that water responds to the energy around it. The Ayurvedic tradition has worked with copper and mineral water for 5,000 years. These are not fringe positions — they are ancient frameworks for a modern problem. Shake’s role is to bring the awareness, the research, and the options together — and let you decide what resonates.

“You are not just what you eat. You are what you drink — and what that water carried before it reached you.”
